A long awaited and controversial report on how France could boost its economy has been handed over to French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The suggestions from a panel of international experts, chaired by French economist Jacques Attali, include job market deregulation, local government reform and allowing more immigrants into France.
Attali said: "Growth could be at least one per cent higher by 2012, the unemployment rate could be cut to 5%; two million jobs could be created; unemployment among young people could be cut to a third of current rates."
Sarkozy, who is under pressure to deliver on election promises to kickstart the economy, called the report "remarkable" and said he agrees with "the best part" of it but will not adopt it wholesale. A seminar next month with lawmakers will decide reform priorities with some measures going into a draft bill on economic modernisation in the spring.
