The new version of the Fiat 500 - the Cinquecento - has reportedly been named "Car of the Year." The award is not officially announced until Monday, but the web site of a Dutch car magazine has already reported that the Fiat beat the Mazda 2 and the Ford Mondeo into second and third place.
"Car of the Year" is chosen by a panel of European motoring journalists who vote for the most outstanding new vehicle of the last 12 months. The car's retro-design is based on the original model first released 50 years ago and which rapidly gained a cult following.
Fiat says that between the model's launch in July and the end of October, more than 100,000 have been ordered. To meet demand the plant in Poland where it is built is to increase capacity by 40,000 to 60,000 vehicles per year.
