Parchim International Airport, the first European airport to have a Chinese owner has been inaugurated in eastern Germany.
Chinese businessman Jonathan Pang, head of LinkGlobal Logistics, paid 30 million euros for the former Soviet base in the state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern last May.
Pang promises to invest an additional 70 million euros in developing the site to accomodate companies producing logistical equipment,Chinese textiles factories, and industrial concerns.
Although Germany's relations with China have cooled recently, Juergen Seidel, the local economics minister believes business deals should go ahead:
"We feel that the political climate between countries is very important. But I believe I can say
that economic necessities are such that we should cooperate internationally. China knows it and Germany also knows it."
According to the new Chinese owners, Parchim is to become an inernational hub in Europe for air freight traffic and is expected to create one thousand new jobs.
Initially, three cargo flights per week will link Parchim with Zhenzouh in China's most populated province Henan.
However, Pang's spokesperson says this could rise to thirty flights per day.
