The merger of energy companies GDF and Suez, forged by French President Sarkozy, has raised fears in Belgium. In Belgium 80 percent of the gas and electricity consumed is controlled by Suez, via its companies Distrigaz and Electrabel
The French state will hold 35.6 percent of the capital. But the Belgians resent being bought up by France. So around a dozen Belgian organisations, including three large trade unions, have decided to create their own cooperative, Power4You. They plan to undercut other energy prices..
Economists are worried that the influence of Belgium in Electrabel will be diminished. Paris has replied that a strategy will soon be worked out between the French and Belgian governments, to respect Belgian interests.
The European Commission will announce its recommendations on 19th September.
