Poland has initialed an agreement on stationing US missile defense components on its territory. Warsaw claims that the move in neither pro-Georgian nor anti-Russian but an attempt to strengthen Poland’s own military potential. However, nobody denies the Georgian context of the decision
The document that Poland initialed yesterday envisages deploying two military bases in Poland, one with interceptor missiles that will complement the third circle of US missile defense system, and the other with Patriot surface-to-air missile system, the long-awaited dream of the Poles. The construction of the first base will commence this year and will be over by 2014-2016.
Patriot-2 will start to arrive as early as at the end of 2008. Special US military contingent will deploy in Poland to service the system. It is important that Poland has managed to convince the US to sign a bilateral declaration about the two countries’ joint response to threats from the outside.
Terror and Fear
Prime Minister Donald Tusk is known as an opponent to a rapid deployment of missile defense elements on Poland’s territory. Unlike President Kaczynski Tusk has no phobias against Russia and he did not support Georgia in the conflict. However, Tusk’s spokesperson told Expert Online that the Premier arrived at the decision having thoroughly analyzed the strategic balance in the region. The move is aimed at strengthening Poland’s military potential, the spokesperson added.
