The head of the European Commission has urged the EU’s leaders to press ahead with ambitious policies, on the eve of their two day summit. He said this would help get over the political setback of Ireland’s “No” to the EU Lisbon reform treaty.
Addressing the European Parliament, Jose Manuel Barroso insisted now was not the time to pause. He was convinced the EU should keep on ratifying the text and get on with taking care of people’s needs.
Barroso said: “Today everyone is feeling the pressure of price rises on food and fuel, but for some there is an extra burden. For poorer households these costs are a bigger share of the household budget, so the rises hit even harder. The same is true for some economic activities, with fuel so critical for some industries.”
Barroso said the summit would back short-term measures to help the poorest sectors of society. He also warned against blaming Ireland for the referendum defeat of the Lisbon Treaty which needs all the member states’ ratification to become effective.
