The new boss of the international Monetary Fund, former French Socialist minister Dominique Strauss-Khan, has held his first press conference in Paris to outline his take on one of the world's top banking jobs.
"In globalisation we don't need less multilateralism, we need more multilateralism. We don't need less IMF, we need more IMF. I define myself as the candidate for reform, now I'm the designated managing director for reform, and what I want to do after November the first will be really the managing director for reform", he said.
Strauss-Khan's economic realism often set him against some of his Socialist colleagues, but he has been a protoge of France's new Conservative president Nicolas Sarkozy for the job. In part this was to lure a potential rival away from domestic politics but, as Sarkozy claimed on Monday, his nomination is a "victory for French diplomacy" - one that was sorely needed.
