Donetsk National University was opened in 1965 on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute. Now DonNU, an institution of the 4th accreditation level with the right of autonomy, is an up-to-date educational complex, which comprises a Humanitarian Institute, 2 technical schools, 8 training centres in the towns of the region and beyond its borders. The educational process is carried out at 72 departments of the University and is also maintained by its 32 branches, apart from that in the courses of upgrade training, the UNESCO department "Ecology of the Technogenic Region", business centre by the TACIS programme, consulting centres of the British, German and French councils.
Nowadays Donetsk National University enrolls about 25 thousand students. Students are trained in 39 specialties.
Training is administered by teachers, among them 2 Academicians and 1 Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 25 Academicians and Corresponding Members of branch academies, 150 PhDs, Doctors of Sciences, 15 Honoured Scientists and Honoured Workers of high school, 550 candidates of sciences and senior lecturs.
The university has links with 17 educational establishments of the world; it is a member of the Association of Universities of Europe, Eurasian \ssociation, a participant of regional European scientific programmes.
There are 12 educational buildings in Donetsk National University. The students can also make use of the large laboratory base, an up-to-date computer centre, 37 computer classes, the library, which is the largest among the educational establishments and has 7 reading rooms and a books stock of I million books.
The students are accommodated in 5 hostels, one of which is for the students having families; there is a students canteen for 750 people; the students improve their health at the sanatorium-preventorium "Badyorist" equipped with modern technology; there is a swimming pool with 50 metres long tracks, 3 gyms and a camp at the Azov seaside.
Preparation of experts is carried out by means of educational and qualifying by levels "Bachelor", "Expert", "Master" on specialties:
